When I first flipped through Oliver + S's Little Things to Sew I fell in love with the Red Riding Hood cape. I knew it was going to made this fall, either as an off-to-kindergarten present or a birthday gift. Circumstances led it to be the latter, which was perfect in the end. The sun was still shining warm and strong those first days of school and the cape would have been set aside for the last summer dresses.
So it became a birthday present. I embroidered the circles onto the front and must admit that this was done totally unskilled. I used tupperware lids to get the sizing and held them to the fabric between pinched fingers while I worked the needle. I know that there is an actual technique to embroidery. Just don't ask me what it is.
I also embroidered "i love you" onto the inside of the cape. When she opened the present I showed her the lettering and said that I made it to wrap her in my hugs when I am not there to do it in person.
She covers herself with it at night, sometimes fingering the letters. It all worked out perfectly. Just perfectly.
