Had we not dawdled to get in the car or fumbled with seatbelts or made that last trip to the bathroom before loading up we would have made it there in time to see twin lambs enter the world. Less than ten minutes before we arrived a mama sheep gave birth. We did make it in time to see them sprawled on each other and to touch their still wet bodies. Mama shifted around the pen to keep herself between us and the lambs. Mama's protective instinct.
Every year we get invited by one of Papi Chulo's collegues to visit the farm during lambing season. One year we actually saw a birth. With eighty ewe's pregnant at the same time, it's a busy month for them.
The girls love climbing on the haystack. Papi Chulo admired the hundred year old handhewn wood. The Old Peep soaked up stories of farming life. I breathed in the fresh air and listened to rain fall on the roof.
What an absolutely perfect outing. In England our neighbors had a dairy sheep farm where they sold divine sheep's milk cheesecake. They had these tiny milking machines. The children just adored going there. One of the highlights of my childhood was getting to hold a real lamb during the Easter service. There's something about sheep, isn't there? Such sweet creature who share their wonderful wool with us. All love,T.
