Last fall I walked into a local yarn store and wandered aimlessly trying to find a yarn or a pattern that would fit the bill for a rapidly approaching birthday. I told myself, "Top-down, no seaming, chunky yarn, no color changes or complicated cables." I had three weeks to make Funky B's birthday sweater. The kind lady at the store showed me skeins and hanks of beautiful chunky yarns. We flipped through books and binders with all sorts of easy-peasy sweaters.
Now if I've learned anything about my sewing and knitting habits, it's that if I am not inspired, I won't do it. Connected to that is knowing that if I don't don't it while inspired, I won't do it either. Too many inspired projects have been interrupted and sit languishing around the house.
But back to last fall. Despite this woman's valient efforts to stay within my parameters, nothing she pulled out inspired me. What did catch my eye though was the Tiny Rocky Coast pattern which has cables ALL OVER IT and uses fingerling weight yarn (for you non-knitters, that's just a few notches above thread)! And yes, that's what I walked out of the store with.
I worked hard on that sweater for three weeks. Alas, it simply wasn't enough time and the deadline of a birthday passed by with the promise of a sweater soon, soon my dear sweet girl. Well, we all know what happened next: holidays, school, blah blah blah. Thankfully 52 hours of travel saved the day and I returned home from India with a sweater that is just perfect for summer nights.
Sometimes inspiration just takes a little time.
Always good to know yourself and be inspired by the not practical.
